Earlier today, the UNC Tar Heels announced that Alex Ostberg and Thomas Ratcliffe will be transferring into the program. This report follows an announcement from earlier this week which revealed that both Ostberg and Ratcliffe were listed on the transfer portal.
The two Stanford superstars will be joining their former coach Chris Miltenberg who left Palo Alto for Chapel Hill in the summer of 2019. Both Ostberg and Ratcliffe will team up with Ivy League standouts Allen Siegler and Conor Lundy who are also transferring to UNC as graduate students.
According to TFRRS, Ratcliffe has one season of cross country eligibility left along with multiple seasons of track eligibility. Ostberg has only one season of outdoor track eligibility remaining.
Other Cardinal standouts such as Matthew Rizzo and Fiona O'Keeffe have also left the Stanford track and field program this year to continue their educations elsewhere. It should be noted that O'Keeffe is a graduate transfer.
The introduction of Ratcliffe and Ostberg to the North Carolina roster, paired with the transfers of Lundy and Siegler, signal a complete program revamp effort from Miltenberg. His approach, however, places emphasis on securing immediate success with athletes who own short-term eligibility. Of the four incoming transfers, only Ratcliffe has eligibility that would allow him to compete in 2022.
Even so, the ability to have accomplished veteran talents on the team should help a promising freshman class transition into the Miltenberg era at the University of North Carolina.
