As many of you probably saw, TSR already put out some D2/D3 content earlier today, making a meet preview a bit trickier than usual given our time constraints. However, with Friday and Saturday expected to be a "lighter" weekend of competition, we weren't sure it was necessary to write out a full-blown preview anyways.
Even so, we still opted to craft our predictions for the Boston U. Scarlet & White Invite. And when you check below, you'll find that we also offered a few lines of analysis as well. Be sure to check back later this weekend to see how our predictions unfolded!
Boston U. Scarlet & White Invite (collegiates only)
*Denotes that a collegiate is also entered in another individual event. In these predictions, TSR is assuming that each runner is contesting an event fresh (i.e. not doubling back). At time of publishing, the entries for this meet were not split into heats yet.
Women's 800 Meters
Julia Nielsen (Bradley) - 2:03
Aoife Dunne (Boston College) - 2:05
Jasmin Muhammad-Graham (TCU) - 2:07
Sasha Crawford (TCU)* - 2:07
Marianne Mihas (Harvard) - 2:07
ANALYSIS: This field features a large handful of women who could be due for a breakout race, specifically Boston College's Aoife Dunne. But at the end of the day, Julia Nielsen should be the top collegiate somewhat comfortably.
Men's 800 Meters
Tim McInerney (Georgetown) - 1:47
Mahamed Sharif (UConn)* - 1:48
Gabriele Angiono (Georgetown) - 1:48
Ryan Martin (TCU) - 1:49
Gianni Henry (TCU) - 1:49
ANALYSIS: Tim McInerney is due to go under 1:48 (800). He's run under 1:50 five separate times throughout his career and just ran a 1:48 PR on this same track the other week. He's been very solid and I think this is the ideal field for him to run under 1:48 in. As for the other men in this race, there is more depth than you may realize. However, a lot of those same guys have either struggled recently, are too young/inexperienced or simply aren't as proven enough for me to say that they'll take down McInerney or Mahamed Sharif.
Women's 1000 Meters
Sophia Gorriaran (Harvard)* - 2:39
Vera Sjoberg (Boston U.) - 2:46
Samira Kennedy (Harvard) - 2:50
Lainey Phelps (Vanderbilt) - 2:51
Julia Schriefer (Brown) - 2:53
ANALYSIS: We'll see what Sophia Gorriaran actually races this weekend -- she ran the 500 meters last weekend after being listed in a variety of events. However, if she does compete over 1000 meters this weekend, then it's not like she'll have an easy time. High school star Sadie Engelhardt and New Balance pro Katherine Mitchell are both extremely talented. I would still take Gorriaran for the win, but it will probably be a tight matchup.
Men's 1000 Meters
DJ Matusz (Dartmouth)* - 2:21
Mahamed Sharif (UConn)* - 2:21
Samuel Geisler (UConn)* - 2:23
Graham Stedfast (UMass Lowell) - 2:24
Sean Laidlaw (Georgetown) - 2:24
ANALYSIS: I'm fairly confident that DJ Matusz and/or Mahamed Sharif will be top-two finishers, but after that, things get a little tricky. There's a lot of volatility on the resumes of these entrants. As such, I opted to go with the guys who I felt were the "safer" bets.
Women's Mile
Maia Ramsden (Harvard) - 4:28
Gracie Morris (TCU) - 4:34
Abigail Hassman (Northeastern)* - 4:38
Ava Duggan (Northeastern) - 4:39
Ellaney Matarese (Harvard)* - 4:41
ANALYSIS: This is going to be a FAST mile race, especially with all of the pros who are headlining this field. Maia Ramsden hasn't given us any reason over the last year to believe that she's not in top form. And given how fast the rest of the NCAA has become in the mile, it feels only natural that she'll be aiming to run something closer to Kimberley May's mark of 4:27.
Men's Mile
Matthew Payamps (Georgetown) - 3:54
Abel Teffra (Georgetown) - 3:54
Parker Stokes (Georgetown) - 3:55
Camden Gilmore (Georgetown) - 3:57
Ferenc Kovacs (Harvard) - 3:57
ANALYSIS: Yes, there are other collegiates in this field other than the Georgetown men, but on paper, the Hoyas are just better. Many of these guys are proven standouts while others have shown that they are on an upwards trajectory. And after seeing this contingent dominate the 1000 meters at Virginia Tech a few weeks ago, there's no reason to doubt their fitness.
Women's 3000 Meters
Ella Gilson (Harvard) - 9:23
Abigail Hassman (Northeastern)* - 9:23
Molly Malague (Harvard) - 9:34
Azza Borovicka-Swanson (Northeastern) - 9:38
Grace Hadley (WPI) - 9:39
ANALYSIS: It feels somewhat safe to say that Ella Gilson and Abigail Hassman are the top-two collegiates in this field. However, trying to figure out how high their ceiling is in a race like this is a bit hard to figure out.
Men's 3000 Meters
Graham Blanks (Harvard) - 7:39
Parker Wolfe (North Carolina) - 7:40
Ben Rosa (Harvard) - 7:50
Peter Herold (Georgetown)* - 7:52
Graydon Morris (TCU) - 7:58
ANALYSIS: This Graham Blanks vs Parker Wolfe showdown could end up being a thrilling battle and possibly the best race of the weekend. On paper, these two men are fairly equal and I feel like this battle could get extremely fast with neither distance runner being someone who you can easily shake.
Women's 5000 Meters
Kate O'Neill (George Mason) - 16:46
Mckenzie Bailey (TCU) - 16:50
June Mwaniki (American) - 16:55
Sophia Strange (Oklahoma Baptist) - 16:59
Rebecca DeKay (New Orleans) - 17:00
ANALYSIS: I'm a little surprised that Kate O'Neill is a bit further down in the entries compared to a few other collegiates. She seemed like the better NCAA runner in the women's 5k entries. But truthfully, your predictions for this race are likely just as good as mine.
Men's 5000 Meters
Albert Velikonja (Dartmouth)* - 14:08
Matthew Coffey (St. Joe's)* - 14:14
Noel Lopez (MSU-Denver) - 14:22
Row Sullivan (American) - 14:26
James Lawrence (Dartmouth) - 14:27
ANALYSIS: Albert Velikonja is undeniably the best 5k runner in this field. But when you look at the rest of the entries, I doubt that this race will dip under 14:00. Maybe I'll end up being wrong (in fact, I hope I am), but I don't see how Velikonja would be pushed enough for that to happen.
