Earlier this week, the Des Moines Register reported that Iowa native Ryan Schweizer will finish his eligibility at Drake University next year as a graduate transfer. Schweizer, who had been with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish since the the fall of 2016, secured collegiate bests of 1:51 (800) and 4:06 (mile) over the past few years. However, his personal bests from high school stand at 1:50 (800) and 4:05 (mile).
A superstar at Dowling Catholic High School, Schweizer was a nine-time state champion in the state of Iowa. Considered by some as the "most talented middle distance boy to ever grace an Iowa track", Schweizer was one of the nation's top high school distance recruits in 2016.
Despite a handful of respectable performances at Notre Dame, Schweizer battled injuries throughout his collegiate career, ultimately limiting his progression.
The younger brother of American 3k record holder Karissa Schweizer, Ryan will be joining a Drake team that had been responsible for developing top talents such as Tinman Elite's Reed Fischer as well as four minute Australian miler Adam Fogg (who was only a redshirt freshman this past indoor season).
Should Schweizer stay healthy and maintain his fitness, the Drake Bulldogs could field a very promising distance medley relay as soon as next winter.
