Earlier today, the University of Oregon announced that Shalane Flanagan, a four-time Olympian, three-time NCAA champion, former American 5k record holder and 2017 New York Marathon winner, would be joining the Ducks as an assistant distance coach.

Flanagan's addition to the Ducks' coaching staff comes less than a month after Bowerman Track Club coach Jerry Schumacher was hired as Oregon's newest Director of Track & Field and Cross Country.

It should be noted that Oregon's 2022 cross country rosters and 2023 track and field rosters do not have any coaches listed in any discipline other than Schumacher.

Flanagan spent 10 years with Bowerman Track Club, training under Schumacher and finding world-caliber success within the Nike-powered program from 2009 to 2019. Since then, she has served as a full-time coach for Bowerman Track Club.

Oregon's newest distance coach was previously a volunteer coach at North Carolina (2009) and at Portland State (2013).

It is unclear if Flanagan will split her coaching duties between Oregon and Bowerman Track Club or if she will narrow her focus only on the Ducks.
