ICYMI: Oregon Signs Danish Distance Star & 4:29 Miler, Sofia Thogersen

Last week, Oregon announced that they have signed Sofia Thogersen, a versatile distance star from Denmark. The 21-year-old enters the NCAA with freshman eligibility, per the Ducks' roster. She recently made her collegiate debut at the Bill Dellinger Invite last week, securing a 6th place finish.
Thogersen was one of the two international signees recently announced by Oregon. The Ducks also signed Northern Ireland distance standout Nick Griggs, a former pro runner for Puma who has posted times of 3:35 (1500), 7:32 (3k) and 13:05 (5k).
The Danish distance runner has emerged as a true star over the last few years. With times of 2:03 (3k), 4:05 (1500), 4:29 (mile), 8:50 (3k), 15:26 (5k) and 10:02 (steeple), Thogersen has been able to secure numerous U20 national records.
Thogersen has also found success on the grass, winning the 2024 and 2025 U20 Danish XC Championships. She would go on to qualify for the U20 European XC Championships in both years where she recorded a 3rd place finish (2024) and a DNF (2025). She also took runner-up honors at the 2022 U20 European XC Championships.

On the track, Thogersen has made multiple appearances at the U20 World Championships. She also qualified for the 2025 World Championships over 1500 meters where she took 11th place in her preliminary heat.
The addition of Sofia Thogersen to Eugene is a massive one, especially for this fall. The Ducks continue to be led by two All-American stars in Juliet Cherubet and Diana Cherotich. However, depth has been a major question mark for this team in 2026, and that's especially true as we have yet to see 2025 cross country All-American, Dalias Frias, make her debut this fall.
Thogersen, however, theoretically gives the Ducks a third high-impact scorer who can potentially bridge the two-halves of this lineup. And if she fully translates her track success to the grass, then Coach Shalane Flanagan may have a third low-stick star to lean on this season (and beyond).
