Earlier today, long-time LSU standout Davis Bove announced via Instagram that he will be finishing his eligibility at Cal Poly as a graduate transfer. He is expected to have one full year of eligibility across all three seasons as well as a second season of cross country eligibility.

Tennessee was also a top contender to land the SEC veteran.

Bove has an argument to be viewed as the greatest, or at least one of the greatest, men's distance runners in LSU program history. On the oval, the now-former Tiger has run times of 1:49 (800), 3:39 (1500), 3:56 (mile) and 7:53 (3k).

His mile and 3k marks are both school records.

The incoming graduate transfer will join a Cal Poly program that has made plenty of noise as of late on the men's side of their roster.

The introduction of Coach Ryan Vanhoy from Ole Miss last summer led to Cal Poly emerging as one of the better men's cross country teams in the NCAA last fall. The Mustangs also recently landed a top distance recruit in Chris Caudillo earlier this year.

On paper, Bove gives the Cal Poly men everything they could want. The mile-centric talent has a skillset that perfectly meshes with the reputation of Vanhoy who has a proven ability to develop elite middle distance runners.

Not only that, but the former LSU runner has a fairly decent history on the grass. Bove won the 2021 Arturo Barrios Invitational and later placed 26th at the 2021 SEC XC Championships.

Bove's greatest value will be reflected on the track, but he could still offer great support in cross country if he has progressed from where he was two years ago.

But maybe more importantly, Bove can now be paired with breakout middle distance star, Aidan McCarthy, who thrived in the 800 meter and 1500 meter distances in the spring. Together, those two men can strengthen the nationally competitive identity of Cal Poly and help mentor incoming freshman, Chris Caudillo.
