Earlier today, The Stride Report confirmed from multiple sources that UCLA distance star Mia Barnett has entered the transfer portal. The move comes just a few days after news that the Bruins' former distance coach, Sean Brosnan, did not have his contract renewed despite spending only one year with the program.

Barnett previously attended the University of Virginia for a year and a half before venturing to Los Angeles this past winter. During a three-month span, Barnett was joined by Dalia Frias (via Duke) and Sam McDonnell (via Alabama) as underclassmen transfers at UCLA.

Multiple coaches who have spoken to TSR have suggested that Sean Brosnan violated NCAA rules by recruiting athletes from other schools before they had entered the transfer portal. Brosnan has since come out and denied the allegations/rumors. He has noted that there have been no violations from the NCAA.

Multiple coaches who have spoken to The Stride Report believe Brosnan was largely ousted from his distance coaching role at UCLA due to the recent speculation surrounding the alleged violations.

Sean Brosnan has been quoted as saying that he did not have his coaching contract renewed because, "[UCLA] did not like how [he] led the team."

Barnett is a true distance star in the NCAA, finding massive success as far back as her freshman year. The former Cavalier and possibly soon-to-be former Bruin holds personal best times of 4:08 (1500), 4:33 (mile) and 9:14 (3k). She was an All-American in the DMR with UCLA this past winter and is currently listed at TSR #50 in The Stride Report's 2023 D1 Preseason XC Top 50 Individual Rankings.

Additionally, multiple coaches who have spoken to TSR have suggested that there could be limitations on Barnett's ability to compete over the next year based on NCAA transfer rules. However, it is not yet clear if any of those limitations will act as road blocks should a future move be made.
